Becoming familiar with actual mission residents challenges our stereotypical thoughts of homeless people.
Recently an 18 year old found his way to the mission through no fault of his own. After living in foster care most of his life, the folks he called mom and dad informed him that funding had run out on his 18th birthday and asked him to leave. Emotionally, he is not equipped to be separated from the only family he has known. Developmental delays prevent speedy entrance to the work force, and he is certainly not capable of standing on his own two feet. Daily he asks office staff for use of the phone so he can call his foster parents, begging for permission to come back.
Young people like David are showing up at the mission more and more. The system has failed these children - there is nothing in place to help once they turn 18. Many leave homes without problem solving skills, are emotionally immature and with a serious lack of social skills.
Of our 41 residents, 14 are between the ages of 18 and 22. And 6 of our 7 children belong to them.
There are no easy answers here… Just want you to know we will catch these young people when they fall between the cracks. Thanks for making it possible for us to do so.

Thanks, Teleflora!
Several Teleflora employees showed up this afternoon with flower arrangements
to brighten our “home”, and balloons and stuffed animals to share with our children.
The annual “Make Someone Smile” campaign certainly did that here at the mission!
We are grateful for all the ways you support us.
